What constitutes defeating Hamas?

I have severe misgivings about the prospect of a land invasion of Gaza.  Of course there are humanitarian concerns both in terms of Gazan civilians and the inevitable deaths among Israeli soldiers. But this piece is about geopolitics and outcomes; so forgive me if I focus lazar-like on that.
